A beam of light from the metro’s history, the Manila-centered cultural organization ‘Renacimiento Manila’ features Manila City Hall from 1939 to 1945, the latest addition to their Commonwealth Period Manila digital project.

After several digital models, the heart of the project would not be complete without its beloved city hall, which heritage and advocacy member Kathryna Beatrice Lee modeled and rendered.

Lee, along with other artists, helped launch the digital project back in July 2022. Manila City Hall was her and Renacimiento Manila’s recent digital project, in which she shared a sneak peek of the building’s perspective on November 6.

Lee’s digital model, officially posted by Renacimiento Manila, showcased important features and perspectives such as the clock tower, fountain, and coffin shape, all while presenting the original neoclassic style of Architect Antonio Toledo.

“The new Manila City Hall opened its doors in 1939, replacing an older building made of Oregon Pine which was built by the Americans in the early 1900s. The imposing new city hall was designed in the Neoclassical style by Architect Antonio Toledo (who also designed numerous other municipal halls and government buildings across the country),” the Renacimiento Manila said.

The model also included a brief history and importance of Manila City Hall, from its construction to being an iconic building and seat of power for the local government.

Lee, together with Renacimiento Manila, rebirths the culture and history of Manila. More than cultural mapping, they introduce heritage conservation to young Manileños, inspiring them to join cultural walks and tours.

Supporting culture and heritage not only means taking pride in your roots but also taking part in learning and imparting history from the local to the national scale.
