The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Calabarzon announced on Thursday the establishment possibly next year of a Marine Science Research Station in Batangas province aimed at protecting the Verde Island Passage (VIP).

The VIP, a part of the Coral Triangle, has been declared the “Center of Marine Shore Fish Biodiversity” due to its highly diverse marine ecosystem.

During the “Kapihan sa DENR Calabarzon” held at the agency’s office in Barangay Mayapa here, Regional Executive Director Nilo Tamoria underscored the need to enhance research and conservation efforts, protect marine ecosystems, and promote sustainable practices in the passage.

“The research station will serve as a hub for scientific studies, capacity-building programs, and collaborative efforts to safeguard the rich marine life and habitats found in the region,” Tamoria said.

The Marine Science Research Station will be established in collaboration with local government units, academic institutions, international marine conservation organizations, and private sectors.

Tamoria said the processing of a special patent for the proposed research center is currently underway and DENR will interface with the private sectors through a memorandum of agreement or understanding by the first quarter of 2025.

DENR-Calabarzon has identified Nasugbu town as the site of the research center, being one of the marine corridors of Verde Island Passage and the gateway from Manila Bay to the VIP.

The research station will include the following facilities: research laboratory, staff office, conference room, library, equipment and storage room, living quarters, and watercraft docking area, among others. (PNA)
