The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Saturday called on the youth to register as voters for next year’s elections.

Bishop Rex Alarcon, the chairperson of the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Youth, said exercising the right to suffrage is an important contribution of the youth to shaping the country’s future.

“I invite, encourage, and urge our young people to register for the upcoming election because this is our contribution and obligation to society and to the community in choosing our leaders and that is also how we participate. Elections are times when we participate directly in governance also that is how we also make a difference even by a single vote speak of what is called the power of one, a single vote is very powerful,” Alarcon said in an interview over church-run Radio Veritas.

At the same time, the Daet prelate encouraged would-be voters to make use of the internet and new technology on how to register in the ongoing voter registration of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

“So I encourage our young people to register, you can check the internet as to the process of registration, you can ask your local office so that you will be able to participate in the upcoming elections, Alarcon said.

Earlier, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) urged the young Filipinos who are turning 18 in May 2022 to register for them to be able to vote in the next elections.

The nationwide voter registration will run until September 30, 2021.

The poll body is looking to register 4 million new voters. (PNA)
