The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Caraga (DSWD-13) launched its ‘Tara, Basa!’ tutoring program on Tuesday, a 20-day initiative aimed at strengthening literacy skills and fostering parental involvement in education.

The program, designed for struggling readers from low-income families, provides structured tutoring sessions to improve reading comprehension while equipping parents with tools to support their children’s learning at home.

“This initiative bridges gaps in education by empowering both students and their families,” the DSWD-13 said in a statement Wednesday.

“We’re not just teaching children to read—we’re ensuring parents can actively participate in their academic growth.”

With 146 trained tutors and 73 youth development workers, the program will directly benefit 1,450 students and parents in Butuan City before expanding to Surigao del Norte, including Siargao Island, later this year.

DSWD-Caraga said the ‘Tara, Basa!’ program reflects the government’s commitment to addressing educational disparities in marginalized communities through targeted interventions and family-centered learning support. (PNA)
