The Department of Public Works and Highways in the Caraga Region (DPWH-13) has announced the completion of the PHP200-million sports complex in Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte.

In a press statement on Wednesday, DPWH-13 Director Pol delos Santos said among the completed facilities inside the sports complex include the PHP50-million two-unit dormitory, and the PHP150-million gymnasium.

The dormitories are designed to serve as two-story six classroom multi-purpose buildings, delos Santos added.

“The sports complex is now completed and ready for use. Siargao Island now can host the next major sporting event in the region,” he said.

Delos Santos added that the sports complex will also serve as an additional tourist attraction in Siargao Island which is now considered a top destination in the country and one of the best in the world.

In the same statement on Wednesday, DPWH-SDN 1st DEO District Engineer Alex Ramos said the gymnasium’s features include two courts for basketball, volleyball, and badminton with rubberized flooring, while the basketball backboards are all made of fiberglass.

“The entire building is fully air-conditioned with a specially-designed ventilating system to cool down the more than 3,000 spectators who will sit on the surrounding bleachers,” he added.

The sports complex, situated in Barangay Osmeña in the town of Dapa, has a total land area of 63,157 square meters. It also houses the oval with two grandstands-cum-multi-purpose buildings. (PNA)
