Carmina’s debut is inclined with the celebration of Filipino-American history month. An event that provides a link between Filipinos living in the U.S. and the Philippines through shared culture and heritage.
“Carmina: Beginnings,” tells the story of a troubled biracial young woman living in New Mexico and discovers that she is a “Diwata” and the daughter of a powerful goddess.
The Carmina series will be directed by Mark A.J. Nazal, an Emmy-Award Winning Visual Effects Artist and Multicultural Filmmaker best known for his works on Fox’s show Gothman and Lucifer.
The comic is also founded by Community Advocate/Producer Joe Arciaga, Actress/Writer/Producer Erica Juliet, and Award-Winning Filipino Comics Artist Roland Amago.
“I believe that just as we’ve traveled to this country, so have our stories that now have a foothold here in some of the most unexpected places,” Nazal said in the Diwata Komiks Press Release.
Diwata Komiks looks to introduce Filipino “Komiks” as its own cultural genre similar to the introduction of Japanese Manga and Anime.
Director of Community Engagement Joe Arciaga closes with his statement saying that “We believe there is a space for these stories today with an ever-growing population of Filipino-Americans looking to see ourselves represented in our own narratives and a new generation of international readers looking for new sources of lore.”
Diwata Komiks is a Filipino-American comics company, consisting of writers and artists from diverse backgrounds, dedicated to sharing stories from cultural heritage to individuals around the world.
