Statista published the results of data gathered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) about the proportion of female inventors among applicants for international patents on February 13 via Facebook page.

According to the data, Cuba had the highest percentage of female applicants, with 53%. The Philippines had the second highest proportion of female investors, with 38%.

Cuba, which only reports to WIPO on an irregular basis, and the Philippines both exceeded the global average in 2021, with more than half of all registered patent applicants being women.

Portugal, a country in southern Europe, came in third place with 34 percent of the data. China outperformed the rest of the world, with 24 percent of female inventors.

Other major European countries, such as Germany and the United Kingdom, but also Italy and Sweden, stayed behind the global average. The United States and France were in the middle of the pack.

Japan had one of the poorest performances, with only 10% of female inventors.

Statista’s mission is to enable people all over the world to make better, faster fact-based business decisions by providing an easy-to-use and affordable global business-data platform. This shows that Filipino female inventors are making strides toward international acclaim.
