All is set for the 2nd leg of the 2023 NextGen Pilipinas Surfing National Tour, the Calicoan Odyssey Waves, Samar’s premiere surf contest in Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

Mayor Annaliza Gonzales-Kwan will lead the opening of the seven-day surf gathering on Friday which will also mark the relaunch of Guian as one of the region’s top tourism destinations.

Hosted and organized by the municipal government of Guiuan, the Calicoan Odyssey Waves is now in its 13th year and will be held at the ABCD break, a wide-open reef with pounding left-handers.

“This is a seven-day surf gathering that brings together the top and upcoming surf athletes all over the country,” Kwan said.

The event is sanctioned by the United Philippine Surfing Association (UPSA), and recognized by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympics Committee.

Just like the first stop in Pagudpud, winners of this event will receive 750 points and PHP50,000 cash, both for men and women divisions.

The ABCD break got its name from the Advance Base Construction Depot, which played a pivotal role in the operations of the air and naval bases of the Allied Forces in Guiuan during World War II.

Also featured in this sporting event is a music festival.

Guiuan is located at the southernmost tip of Samar Island and is three hours away from Tacloban City, the capital of Eastern Visayas and only two hours away from Borongan City, which will also host an upcoming leg of the national tour. (PNA)
