The city government of Surigao has taken steps to develop a mariculture park and upgrade its fish landing port through a PHP100 million project proposal to the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA).

In an interview Tuesday, Surigao City Public Information Office chief Robbie Ruaya said PFDA Gen. Manager Glen Pangapalan and Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao have already conducted an onsite survey Monday on the proposed 25-hectare mariculture park in Barangay Nabago and the existing fish landing port in Barangay Baybay.

“The project will directly benefit the fisherfolk of Barangay Nabago and its nearby areas,” Ruaya said, referring to the mariculture park project, which she said has already undergone evaluation, survey, and technical assessment.

The assessment conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, she said, was essential for securing the Environmental Compliance Certificate from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

In a separate statement on Tuesday, Dumlao said the city government envisions a cutting-edge fish landing facility.

“The two projects will also ensure fish conservation and sustainable management of the marine resources of the city with the aim to bolster fish sufficiency and food security,” Dumlao said.

The two projects he added, envisage livelihood opportunities such as sea cage cultures, seaweed farming, mussel culture, pearl culture, and innovative sea ranching practices. (PNA)
