At least 15 sites in Leyte province have been identified for science tourism meant to raise awareness and appreciation of science, technology, and innovation through educational tourism.

Department of Science and Technology Leyte provincial director John Glenn Ocaña said these sites will have to be validated by the Department of Tourism (DOT) for readiness and compliance with educational tourism standards.

Considered for the tour are the Eastern Visayas Science Centrum in Palo town, the TOFA coffee processing center in Kananga town, the Baybay sweet potato ice cream facility in Baybay City, and the Eastern Visayas Food Innovation Center in Tacloban City.

Other sites are the Philippine Science High School laboratory and technology building in Palo town, the Ormoc City Museum, Mary’s Abuyog spesyal tsokoleyt (special chocolate) moron center in Tacloban City, Alto Peak chocolate processing in Ormoc City, Eco-sep Technology in Dulag town, and Villaconzoilo Farm in Jaro town.

Also listed are PAGASA Radar Dome in Tacloban City, Philippine Associated Smelting and Refining Corporation in Isabel town, SC Global Coco Products, Inc. in Baybay City, Specialty Pulp Manufacturing, Inc. also in Baybay City, and Energy Development Corporation in Ormoc City.

“These sites offer an educational experience as visitors learn the process of making products and provide insights into the facilities and laboratories, learn about sustainable farming, among others,” Ocaña told the Philippine News Agency on Wednesday.

The DOST and DOT will assess these science tourism sites and conceptualize tour programs tailored to the region’s offerings.

The project aims to combine science and tourism, creating educational and immersive experiences that showcase Leyte’s rich scientific and natural heritage, according to the DOST official.

“This science tourism branding implies an exciting adventure into the world of science, which can be a powerful draw for those interested in both science and travel,” Ocaña added.

The DOST Leyte provincial office and DOT Eastern Visayas regional office seek to develop innovative tourism products that not only attract visitors but also promote scientific awareness and appreciation. (PNA)
