Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna on Monday asked the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) to install more historical markers in the capital city in honor of the heroes who contributed to its rich history.

Speaking at the 453rd anniversary of the Battle of Bangkusay at Plaza Moriones in Tondo, Lacuna called on the NHCP to erect more markers that would honor Rajah Soliman, Rajah Matanda and Lakan Dula, among others.

She said it is also fitting to honor pre-colonial rulers through the installation of historical markers.

“Ngayon na po ang tamang panahon upang sila ay bigyan natin ng panandang pangkasaysayan, dahil ito din ang panahon kung saan tayo ay mahigpit ang pangangailangan sa mga karagdagang bukal ng inspirasyon na magsusulong pa ng ating mga adhikain para sa malasakit at pagmamahal sa ating inang bayan (This is the right time for us to give them historical markers because this is also the time when we are in dire need of additional springs of information which would help us pursue our goals toward compassion and love of country),” Lacuna said.

She cited the contributions of patriots from Pampanga and Bulacan provinces who fought with the natives of Manila against Spanish occupation 453 years ago.

As the city is celebrating its 453rd founding anniversary on June 24, Lacuna called on Manilans to look back, understand, and appreciate the past events that brought Manila to where it is today and will lead the city to the future.

The 1571 Battle of Bangkusay marked the last resistance by locals against the Spaniards’ occupation of the Pasig River delta, where the pre-colonial kingdom of Tondo was located. (PNA)
