The Negros Occidental provincial government is extending wellness and medical support to senior citizens in need to mark the observance of the Elderly Filipino Week from Oct. 1 to 7.

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, who led the program held at the Capitol Lagoon and Park here on Friday, said such a meaningful occasion not only honors the elderly but also highlights and acknowledges their continued and lasting contributions to society.

“Your life, exemplified with dedication, strength, and perseverance, has played an integral part in the development of both Negros Occidental and our country,” he added.

During the program, Lacson, with the Provincial Social Welfare Development Office, turned over wheelchairs for identified beneficiaries in each of the 31 local government units (LGUs) in the province.

Through the Provincial Health Office, the province also provides flu and pneumonia vaccinations and holds medical consultations for the elderly.

“These are vital initiatives that aim to safeguard your health and well-being,” the governor said.

Part of the activity was the “Walk for Life” joined by members of the Federation of Senior Citizens’ Association of the Philippines and social welfare personnel from various LGUs.

“To all the senior citizens present, this ‘Walk For Life’ is a powerful reminder that life is a continuous journey full of purpose, regardless of age. Let us walk together, not just in celebration of today, but in the spirit of unity and respect for all that you have done and continue to do,” Lacson said.

He added that this year’s theme, “Senior Citizens: Building the Nation, Inspiring Generations,” reflects the vital role of the Filipino elderly in shaping the nation and passing on values and wisdom. (PNA)
