Farmers in Barangay Bawani, Mawab, Davao de Oro, are set to benefit from a PHP5.8 million diversion dam project turned over by the Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA-11) on Wednesday.

In a statement Thursday, DA-11 alternate rice focal person Jacinto Macoy Jr. said the project awarded to the Bawani Small Rice Farmers Association (BASRIFA) will enhance rice production in the municipality and improve farmers’ livelihoods by providing a reliable and sustainable water supply.

“Now that we have a stable irrigation system that serves 23 hectares of rice land, you don’t have to depend on rainwater to irrigate your farms,” Macoy said.

BASRIFA chairperson Fernando dela Torre thanked the national government and DA for the project, noting that it will help farmers increase their income.

He also assured proper operation and maintenance by the 33 farmer-recipients.

Governor Dorothy Gonzaga also thanked the agency for its continued support. “Let’s work together to bring more projects and accomplishments to Barangay Bawani,” she said.

Meanwhile, in the same province, the DA-11, through its High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP), partnered with the Davao de Oro provincial government and the municipality of Maragusan to hold a Vegetable Derby Harvest Festival on Thursday.

HVCDP regional vegetable focal person Merriel Bernardo emphasized the importance of knowledge sharing and collaboration for the agriculture sector’s success.

“We cannot choose for our farmers. They have the freedom to decide what is best for their farms. That is why this showcase allows them to see and evaluate various crop varieties,” Bernardo said.

She added that the results of the festival would guide farmers in choosing seed varieties for future distribution and equip them to make informed decisions when facing challenges in the field. (PNA)
