About 2,104 passengers and 887 crews of the Norwegian Spirit, a cruise ship operated by the Norwegian Cruise Line, arrived at the Port of Currimao in Ilocos Norte on Christmas Day.

This marks the ship’s first journey to this northern gateway of Luzon.

Araceli Salem, senior tourism operations officer of the Department of Tourism (DOT) 1 (Ilocos), confirmed this Thursday as they welcomed the visitors with hand-woven leis made of the Ilocano Abel fabric.

The Port of Currimao was the ship’s first destination in the Philippines after departing from Taipei City on Dec. 22.

The passengers and crew were welcomed by cultural dancers of Currimao who ”gave them an entertainment number at the port prior to a simple exchange of plaque by representatives of the Philippine Ports Authority, DOT, and the local governments of Currimao and Ilocos Norte,” Salem said.

The guests visited some heritage sites in Vigan, Laoag, Paoay, and Badoc.

According to the DOT, the arrival of cruise ships in various parts of the country this year signals vibrant cruise tourism in the country that could bring lasting benefits to all.

For 2024, the DOT is expecting 109 calls in 46 destinations nationwide with other confirmed schedules extending to 2027.

More than 100 cruise calls across multiple destinations were also recorded in 2023, showing increasing industry confidence in the country’s capabilities.

By streamlining operations, enhancing efficiencies, and focusing on sustainable practices, the government under the Marcos administration aims to build an industry that benefits everyone – the cruise lines and their crew members, the local communities, and the travelers who seek to explore the rich diversity of the cultures.

Under the National Tourism Development Plan of 2023 to 2028, there will be continuous upgrading of both Currimao Port and Salomague Port in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur to increase cruise calls in the region. These ports are strategically located near the popular beaches and heritage sites of the Ilocos Region. (PNA)
