In a landmark celebration of women’s contributions to Philippine history, the Tandang Sora Women’s Museum officially opened on Feb. 19, the death anniversary of Melchora Aquino, more commonly known as Tandang Sora.

The inaugural institution stands as the country’s first museum dedicated solely to honoring the crucial roles of Filipinas throughout the nation’s history.

Located beside the Tandang Sora National Shrine on Banlat Road, Quezon City, the museum pays tribute to Tandang Sora.

An important figure in the Philippine Revolution, Tandang Sora’s massive support for the Katipunan earned her the title “Mother of the Philippine Revolution”.

The two-story structure, inspired by traditional “bahay na bato” architectural design, was spearheaded by Ar. Gerard Lico and his firm Arc Lico. Inside, visitors are greeted with a rich tapestry of exhibits that tell the story and achievements of Filipina women throughout history.

The museum received funding from the office of Hon. Senator Risa Hontiveros, an advocate for women’s rights, who believes that this initiative symbolizes progress in the fight for gender equality.

Art curator and artist Sandra Torrijos, whose vision was instrumental in bringing the museum to fruition, emphasized the importance of such a space.

Torrijos’ dedication to her craft and advocacy, alongside the support of Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, made the long-held dream into a touching tribute to Filipino heroines.

The museum’s galleries are adorned with paintings, sculptures, and artifacts that not only highlight historical figures but also celebrate contemporary women’s movements.

The exhibit, “HERstorical Philippine Timeline”, is a vibrant and interactive journey from pre-colonial era to feminism in the present time.

Visitors can explore the Tandang Sora Women’s Museum from Tuesdays to Sundays, 9am to 4pm.

It is free for PWDs, the elderly, and the public for the months of February and March.
