As temperatures begin to rise across the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a reminder that while hot weather is expected in the coming months, it will not be as severe as last year’s record-breaking heat.

According to PAGASA spokesperson Analisa Solis, a severe El Niño in 2024 caused significant heat indices of up to 52°C in many regions. However, this year’s temperatures may still reach 48-50°C in select areas by late April to early May, although widespread heat extremes are not forecast.

Despite the fact that PAGASA has yet to formally declare the summer season, Metro Manila and other provinces have already reported heat indices ranging from 40 to 41°C. The northeast monsoon (Amihan) and the shear line have temporarily kept certain areas cool, but as these weather systems diminish, the transition to a warmer and drier climate will become more obvious.

To help you stay safe and comfortable this season, here are five important things to remember:

1. Stay hydrated

When the heat is intense, your body loses fluids faster than you realize. Make it a habit to sip water regularly throughout the day, even if you’re not feeling thirsty. Carry a reusable water bottle wherever you go and opt for water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables. Try to avoid too much coffee, tea, or alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration.

2. Avoid the midday sun

The sun is at its fiercest between 10 AM and 4 PM, making it the most dangerous time to be outdoors. If you have errands or outdoor activities, schedule them for early morning or late afternoon. If going outside is unavoidable, wear loose, breathable clothing, apply sunscreen, and bring an umbrella or hat for extra shade.

3. Monitor heat index and weather updates

Check PAGASA’s weather updates regularly so you can plan your day accordingly. Knowing when high temperatures or heat waves are expected allows you to take precautions, whether that means adjusting your schedule, staying indoors, or dressing appropriately for the weather.

4. Be mindful of heat-related illnesses

Too much heat can be dangerous. Watch out for signs like dizziness, headaches, nausea, and excessive sweating. If you or someone around you starts feeling unwell, move to a cool area, drink water, and rest. If symptoms worsen or the person stops sweating, it could be heat stroke—seek medical help immediately.

5. Keep your home cool

Simple adjustments can make your home a comfortable refuge from the heat. Keep curtains or blinds closed during peak sunlight hours to block out excess heat. Use fans or air conditioning to improve airflow, and consider taking cool showers to regulate your body temperature.

With the Philippine summer fast approaching, taking precautions will help ensure that you stay safe and comfortable. Keep an eye on weather updates, follow heat safety guidelines, and make necessary adjustments to your daily routine. The heat may be intense, but with the right preparations, you can still enjoy the season while staying cool and healthy!
