Senator Loren Legarda on Wednesday reaffirmed the importance of Philippine literature in shaping national identity and elevating the country’s cultural presence on the world stage, as the nation observes National Literature Month this April.

“There is a rich history of literature in our country, even dating back to pre-colonial times when our ancestors passed down epics, folktales, myths, and songs through oral tradition,” she said in a news release.

Legarda emphasized that both oral and written forms of literature are crucial in preserving heritage, fostering creativity, and passing on timeless values to younger generations.

National Literature Month is commemorated every April under Proclamation No. 968, signed in 2015 by then president Benigno Aquino III.

It coincides with global celebrations such as International Children’s Book Day, World Book Day, and World Intellectual Property Day.

This year’s theme, “Sikad Panitikan: Kultura at Panitikan ng Kaunlaran,” highlights literature as a catalyst for cultural progress and national development — a vision strongly supported by Legarda.

The senator recalled how the literary works of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal helped ignite Filipino nationalism during the Spanish colonial period, saying, “Without literature, there is no real progress.”

Legarda also pointed to the Philippines’ designation as guest of honor at the 77th Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany, one of the most prestigious international publishing events, as a testament to the country’s growing literary presence. (PNA)
