The Surigao City government and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Caraga Region (13) has launched a major aquaculture development project through a partnership that will provide fisherfolk with fish cages, fingerlings, and feeds.

The Aquaculture and Mariculture Expansion Project (AMEIP) will equip the Baybay Lobster Culturist Association with two 10-meter fish cages complete with nets and mooring systems, plus 40,000 milkfish fingerlings and 1,528 feed bags.

“This support will significantly boost our production,” said association president Merry Flor Lipio in an intervew Tuesday, noting the project would reduce pressure on wild fish stocks.

BFAR-13 Director Omnia Olama and Vice Mayor Alfonso Casurra signed the agreement at the City Hall on Monday.

City officials said the initiative aims to increase local fish supply by 30 percent while creating sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities.

BFAR estimates the project could benefit over 200 fisher households in Barangay Baybay and adjacent areas. (PNA)
