A local rice program dubbed “Bodega ng Bayan” has benefited 1,134 families in four barangays in Siargao town, providing essential food support to residents.
The program, initiated by the local government unit (LGU) of General Luna, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, aims to distribute five kilograms of rice to every beneficiary in the town.
“This program has been going on since the start of the administration of Mayor Sol Matugas,” Tawintawin village chief Ma. Levi Comendador said in a phone interview on Thursday.
On Wednesday, 335 residents from her barangay were among the beneficiaries of the rice assistance distribution conducted by the LGU, led by Mayor Matugas. Other recipient barangays included Corazon, with 245 beneficiaries; Magsaysay, 279; and Sta. Cruz, 275.
“We are so thankful to the government for this rice assistance. The five kilos will support our food needs for a week,” Lucila Plaza, 60, a resident of Tawintawin, said during a separate phone interview.
She also expressed hope that the LGU rice program would continue to benefit more residents, especially those in remote areas. (PNA)
