Various government agencies collaborating for an inclusive halal industry launched the Halal Market Caravan in this city on Friday.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Misamis Oriental said promoting the halal economy in Northern Mindanao gained momentum after the local government’s approval of City Ordinance 14477-23 that promotes halal as part of its commitment to cultural inclusivity, consumer empowerment, and sustainable growth.

In Islam, halal means permissible or lawful, commonly relating to food and drinks.

“It is about ensuring Halal-certified products are accessible and visible to both our growing Muslim community and consumers who value quality, cleanliness and safety,” the DTI said in a Facebook post.

The caravan is also being promoted by the Cagayan de Oro City Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Misamis Oriental Retailers Association.

Lawyer Jose Edgardo Uy, head of the city’s Regulatory Compliance Board, said the city government has been promoting an inclusive economy with diverse practices, including the halal industry.

In a statement, he said they encourage other markets in the region to promote halal-certified products while in the city, four commercial markets have complied with the ordinance. (PNA)
