President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday called on the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to serve not only as defenders of the nation but also as faithful guardians of public funds, stressing accountability as the military undergoes modernization.

Marcos administered the oath of office to 38 newly promoted AFP generals and flag officers, along with one graduate of the Foreign Pre-Commissioned Training Institutions (FPCTI), during a ceremony at Malacañan Palace.

In his speech, the President commended the AFP’s focus on readiness and modernization while underscoring the importance of integrity in the use of public resources, especially following the signing of the 2026 national budget.

“With the signing of the 2026 national budget, I reiterate the government’s commitment to uphold the welfare of the women and men who protect our nation. This includes the updated base pay schedule, increased subsistence allowance of our military and uniformed personnel,” Marcos said.

He reminded the newly promoted officers that stewardship of public funds is inseparable from their mandate as military leaders.

“More than your role as the protectors of our nation, you must also be among the faithful stewards who guard public resources,” the President said.

“Be among those who ensure that every peso translates into capability, preparedness, and integrity,” he added.

Marcos also cited the AFP’s accomplishments over the past year, noting its role in protecting Philippine waters, responding to calamities, sustaining peace and security, and strengthening international defense partnerships through joint exercises and interoperability initiatives.

“Last year, the AFP remained focused on readiness with purpose. We advanced our modernization efforts that support both defense and humanitarian missions,” he said.

The President also paid tribute to the families of the officers, acknowledging their sacrifices as a vital source of strength for the military.

“Kayo ang tahimik na haligi at matibay na sandigan ng bawat kawal ng ating Sandatahan (You are the silent pillars and strong backbone of every soldier in our military),” Marcos said, calling on everyone to join him in praying for the safety of AFP personnel.

He concluded by urging the newly promoted officers to uphold the honor of the institution.

“Stand your ground and keep the AFP worthy of its name,” Marcos said. (PNA)
