The hosting of Palarong Bicol 2026 is expected to boost sports tourism and generate more economic activity in the city, with nearly 10,000 athletes, coaches, parents, and school officials in Legazpi for the week-long regional sports event, a local official said Monday.

During a press conference, Legazpi City Sports Officer Marion Go said the regional meet has led to increased demand for accommodations and tourism-related services.

“Sports tourism is a big factor in revenue. We received reports showing that Airbnb accommodations are filling up. This is our chance to promote other destinations, such as restaurants that are not yet widely known, including viewing decks (for Mayon Volcano) where visitors can safely enjoy the scenery without entering the seven-kilometer danger zone,” Go said.

He added that hosting gives a “home-court” advantage to Legazpi athletes, who were able to practice in different venues before the official games.

“We are always telling our athletes to dream high, don’t just settle for less. You need to push them. It will start with their attitude, that’s why we are investing in the grassroots,” he said in Filipino.

Go said that with help from various partners, Legazpi contingents secured sponsors that boosted athlete morale. The city government will also provide incentives to winners after the Palaro.

At least 280 gold medals are at stake in Palarong Bicol 2026.

Meanwhile, the provincial government of Sorsogon will host Palarong Bicol in 2027.

Governor Edwin Hamor assured that the province is prepared with sports facilities and necessary infrastructure, with ongoing upgrades to ensure safety and comfort for athletes and delegates.

Sorsogon last hosted the regional meet in 1995. (PNA)
