In line with the celebration of National Women’s Month, the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Davao Region (DSWD-11) reported on Monday that it disbursed PHP24.3 million in 2025 to provide social services at its Home for Girls and Women.

The amount supported 131 clients and facilitated the rehabilitation of 53 others at the institution, which offers temporary shelter, protection, care and rehabilitation to girls and women, who are survivors of abuse, neglect, exploitation and other forms of violence.

The center aims to restore their well-being, and support their reintegration into families and communities.

“We cater to children, particularly women and girls needing special protection or those in difficult circumstances, such as survivors of abuse, neglect, and exploitation, who require community-based protection,” DSWD-11 social worker Rose Ann Cordoves said at a press briefing.

Cordoves said the center currently handles 78 active cases involving survivors of gender-based violence, child abuse, and psychological or emotional abuse, including children in conflict with the law and survivors of exploitation.

Sherlyn Concubierta, DSWD-11 women focal person, likewise outlined activities for the National Women’s Month, which kicked off Monday: International Women’s Day on March 6; information drive on gender sensitivity and gender-based violence laws on March 18; and culmination program on March 30.

“Our focus is to advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Through this, they will be spared from abuse,” Concubierta said.

DSWD is mandated by laws, such as the Magna Carta of Women and the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act, to chair and co-chair various inter-agency councils ensuring child protection and upholding women’s role in nation-building. (PNA)
