About 36,250 vulnerable residents in Calamba City are set to receive 20-kilogram bags of rice funded through a PHP87 million allocation from the Local Government Support Fund (LGSF), Mayor Roseller H. Rizal said on Thursday.
The distribution began on Wednesday under the local initiative “Biyayang Bigas para sa Ating Mamamayan” and is targeted for completion within a week.
“We started distributing the 20-kilo bags of rice yesterday, and we expect to finish within a week,” Rizal said in an interview during the city’s 284th municipal founding anniversary celebration at the Jose Rizal Coliseum here.
The aid covers priority sectors across the city, including displaced overseas Filipino workers, tricycle and transport drivers, motorcycle delivery and ride-hailing riders, persons with disabilities, fisherfolk, farmers and service workers.
Rizal added that the same 36,250 beneficiaries will receive a second tranche of 20-kilogram rice assistance in September.
Beyond food security, the mayor reported additional national allocations, including another PHP87 million earmarked for infrastructure projects and PHP100 million from the Office of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to equip the city-owned hospital in Barangay Canlubang.
“I thank President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for this continuous support to Calamba,” Rizal said, noting that while the local government maintains its own budget, supplemental funding from the national government broadens the reach of essential social services. (PNA)
