Co-creator behind the iconic ‘Doraemon’ franchise, Fujiko A. Fujio (whose real name is Motoo Abiko), has recently passed away at his home in Tokyo at the age of 88, Japanese media reported on Thursday, April 7.

Abiko was responsible for numerous works of the ‘Doraemon’ franchise, creating about 800 chapters since 1970.

Both Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko – with their pen names being Fujiko Fujio – moved into Tokiwa-so in 1954, before serializing more shonen like Ninja Hattori and eventually collaborating with Fujumoto’s first serialization of Doraemon in 1970, granting prominence among Japanese pop-culture to this day.

After serializations of Ninja Hattori, other mangas like Monster Kid, and The Laughing Salesman followed shortly after, making its way in television screens decades later.

Abiko left the world several distinctions, from both friends’ Shogakukan Award in 1963, and his 34th Japan Cartoonists Association Award, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award, to add among his legacies.
