The Department of Agriculture in Davao Region (DA-11), through its Kabuhayan at Kaunlaran ng Kababayang Katutubo (4K) Program, turned over a hauling truck to the Ata-Paraiso Tularo Association (APATA) of Paquibato District on Tuesday.

DA-11 Regional Director Macario Gonzaga said the partnership between APATA and See’s International Food Manufacturing Corp. began in 2025 through agri-entrepreneurship training and market-linkage activities that connected Indigenous Peoples Organizations (IPO) with private sector buyers.

Recognizing the market potential of Cardava bananas produced by the Ata, the DA-4K Program facilitated discussions that led to a sustainable market partnership with See’s International.

“The turnover of this hauling truck represents more than the provision of equipment. It is a symbol of partnership, empowerment, and inclusive agricultural development,” Gonzaga said in an inteview, noting that the vehicle will strengthen market access, improve efficiency, reduce post-harvest delays, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for the Ata community.

In August 2025, APATA delivered its first shipment of 1,593 kilos of Cardava bananas to See’s International.

Since then, the group has completed 13 transactions, supplying about 49 metric tons and generating over PHP624,000 in gross income.

The partnership was further formalized in July this year through a Letter of Agreement to strengthen collaboration in production, transport, and marketing.

Gonzaga acknowledged that transportation challenges had previously hampered deliveries due to austerity measures limiting DA-11’s hauling assistance. The new truck, he said, addresses those logistical constraints.

For his part, APATA Chairperson Oliver Manlangan described the turnover as a “dream come true” for their association.

“Thank you for helping us in this venture. For farmers like us, it is impossible to send our products, especially abroad. Now that we have a buyer, people ask why we can sell at a good price,” he said, adding that DA-11 also guided them in proper pricing.

Manlangan assured that the association will take care of the hauling truck as they continue to expand their market opportunities. (PNA)
