The 25th Davao Agri-Trade Expo (DATE) opened here on Thursday at the SMX Convention Center, showcasing solutions, technology and innovations to help the farmers level up and foster competitiveness.

In his speech, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) president John Carlo Tria said Mindanao’s agriculture has the potential to meet the forecasted increase in food demand while ensuring a sustainable, safe and secure food supply.

“Staying competitive is essential for farmers, agribusinesses, and food producers. Embracing advanced technologies such as precision agriculture, loT (Internet of Things), drones, and autonomous machinery can improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance productivity,” he said.

Tria said modern technology helps farmers make informed decisions with data using biotech and genetics to improve crop and livestock traits.

“This can lead to higher-quality products and reduced production costs,” he said.

Tria said farmers and agribusinesses should stay informed about the latest trends, technologies and best practices through training, workshops and industry events.

DATE is an annual event organized by the DCCCII that aims to strengthen agribusiness by reinforcing collaboration between the government and the private sector for the development of the agriculture sector.

In her message, Senator Cynthia Villar said the event would help accelerate the development of the agriculture sector in Mindanao.

Mindanao is the biggest producer of agri-products in the country, with bananas, coconut, pineapples, other fruits and nuts comprising the top five export products of the region.

Villar said Mindanao’s sustainable development is driven by agriculture, with one-third of the island devoted to it, enabling it to supply as much as 40 percent of the country’s food requirements. (PNA)
