The Department of Agriculture (DA) 11 (Davao Region) has provided PHP8.7 million worth of livestock and poultry to 177 farmers and raisers in Davao de Oro to aid agricultural recovery.

Distributed on Oct. 21, the assistance from the agency’s Quick Response Fund targets communities affected by a shearline and low-pressure area in early 2024.

DA-11 Disaster Risk Reduction and Management focal person Joedel Leliza said the intervention aims to rebuild smarter and more sustainably.

“This support is not just about replacing animals,” Leliza said in a statement on Wednesday. “It’s about rebuilding smarter, providing better tools, knowledge, and long-term support systems to ensure farmers recover stronger.”

The municipality identified 168 beneficiaries for chickens and nine for turkeys. Recipients received one male and two female chickens, or two turkeys each. The allocation will also cover the distribution of 200 goats, 18 cattle, and 15 carabaos in the coming days.

Leliza said livestock and poultry contribute more than 25 percent of the national agricultural output, making the intervention strategic for restoring livelihoods and food security.

One of the beneficiaries, Diosdado Satera of Montevista town, said he was “so happy” to receive the aid.

“I will do my best to raise and multiply these chickens to make sure the support I received from the government will flourish,” Satera said.

The initiative is part of DA-11’s broader disaster recovery and rehabilitation program for smallholder farmers and backyard raisers. (PNA)
