The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 13 (Caraga) has released PHP7.3 million to 1,074 students who participated in community service under the cash-for-work scheme in Del Carmen, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.

In a statement Tuesday, the DSWD-13 said the payouts were made under the Kapangyarihan at Kaunlaran sa Barangay – Cash-For-Work (KKB-CFW) modality of the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan – Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) program.

The students, all from the Surigao del Norte State University (SNSU) – Del Carmen Campus, rendered 35 to 65 days of community service to qualify for the cash assistance, according to the department.

“The cash-for-work modality under the KALAHI-CIDSS program aims to provide short-term employment opportunities while fostering community development,” the DSWD-13 said.

The program also helps students reduce financial burdens while empowering them to contribute to local development, it added.

Arnold, 20, a student from Barangay Poblacion, said his duties included maintaining the cleanliness of community areas and canals that serve as mosquito breeding grounds.

“I’m happy that through this DSWD program, I can contribute to the welfare of our community and at the same time provide financial support for my studies,” he said in a phone interview Tuesday.

He also thanked the government for implementing programs that address students’ needs and promote their welfare. (PNA)
