Some 33 stalls of the famous native rice cake (puto Calasiao) were demolished as part of the town’s road clearing operation even as the municipal government assured a better and permanent location.

Municipal engineer Melanio de Vera, in an interview Thursday, said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have seen the stalls to be on the right of way, particularly evident during the ongoing widening of a nearby bridge.

“Without the stalls, it will help ease traffic congestion in the area as the bridge is being widened,” he said.

De Vera disclosed that the stalls were moved temporarily at the town plaza while their permanent location, still within the town proper, is being readied.

“The municipal government-funded and is constructing their permanent location. The construction will take one to two months to finish” he said.

Nonetheless de Vera said, the puto vendors told him that their sales were not affected by the relocation.
