A Filipino student has made history with his outstanding academic feat at one of the world’s most prestigious institutions.

Eion Nikolai Chua, 22, earned magna cum laude with highest honors from Harvard University after completing a double undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Economics, alongside a Master’s degree in Chemistry and Chemical Biology—all within just four years.

Chua was among the thousands of graduates honored during Harvard University’s 374th Commencement Exercises on May 29, where over 9,400 degrees were awarded, including more than 2,000 from Harvard College.

Recognized for his academic excellence and commitment to scholarship, Chua was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, the oldest and most prestigious honor society in the United States.

Before his Harvard journey began in 2021, Chua studied at MGC New Life Christian Academy and later at the International School Manila, both located in Taguig City, Philippines.

Throughout his time at Harvard, Chua was known not only for his academic rigor but also for his leadership and musical pursuits. He served as president of the Harvard Chemistry Club and fulfilled a long-time dream of performing in an orchestra as a pianist with the Harvard Pops Orchestra.

He shares that his accomplishments are the result of a wide network of support—from his parents and teachers to his mentors and peers at Harvard. Chua acknowledges that many played a role in guiding and encouraging him throughout his academic journey.

Now back in the Philippines for a brief respite, Chua plans to explore opportunities in the local chemistry industry. Looking further ahead, he envisions starting a chemistry-based business focused on utilizing local resources—such as converting agricultural waste into useful biochemical products—to benefit Filipino communities.

Driven by both intellect and purpose, Chua is a rising example of Filipino excellence on the global stage and a reminder that world-class education can go hand-in-hand with a heart to give back.
