The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) is throwing its full support behind the establishment of a Halal Town in Manila to promote cultural harmony, generate jobs, and boost tourism in the capital.

Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso led a coordination meeting and site inspection to map out plans for the project, envisioned as a modern halal and cultural hub in Quiapo.

Pangandaman said the project will symbolize unity and inclusivity, bringing together diverse communities while opening economic opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

She revealed that the United Arab Emirates government has expressed readiness to assist in building a new mosque in Quiapo, envisioned as the spiritual centerpiece of the Halal Town.

“Alam n’yo po ba itong Halal project (culinary hub) is a multi-billion industry po (Did you know this Halal project — a culinary hub — is a multi-billion industry?)” she said.

The Budget chief said the DBM is exploring the use of the Local Government Support Fund (LGSF) to help realize the city of Manila’s plans once project specifics are finalized.

The proposed Halal Town will feature halal-certified food stalls, fabric and craft shops, and microenterprises, complemented by smart lighting, cultural archways, and Muslim-Filipino architectural designs.

The project aims to transform a portion of Quiapo into a vibrant trade and cultural center while preserving its historic character.

For his part, Moreno thanked the Marcos administration and the DBM for their support, saying the initiative will benefit not just Manila but also Mindanao-based entrepreneurs whose products reach the capital.

Pangandaman also inspected ongoing urban renewal projects for the city’s ASEAN 2026 hosting, including the proposed Central Park in downtown Manila.

She said about PHP78 million has already been released under the “Green, Green, Green” program to expand green spaces and improve infrastructure.

“Under President Marcos’ leadership, our investment in projects rooted in heritage and community will serve as a foundation for a truly inclusive and prosperous Philippines,” Pangandaman said. (PNA)
