The city government formally donated the land where the Balantang Memorial Cemetery National Shrine, the interment site for World War II heroes from Panay, is currently located in Barangay Balantang in Jaro district.

The city government, represented by Mayor Jerry Treñas, and Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) Administrator Undersecretary Reynaldo Mapagu signed the deed of donation and acceptance at the city mayor’s office on Monday.

The 5,824-square-meter property was declared a national shrine under PVAO’s administration in 1994 through Proclamation No. 425.

Treñas emphasized the importance of the donation, noting that while a usufruct agreement previously existed, full ownership by PVAO allows for further development of the site.

“As a son of a veteran, I understand the value of a national shrine for our veterans who fought bravely during several wars. I know what the veterans feel. They feel very strongly about this shrine, and the city government understands,” he said.

“It is our honor to finally donate this because you’ve been using this anyway so that you have full ownership over this property.”

Mapagu, for his part, expressed gratitude and highlighted the shrine’s role in educating the youth about heroism and patriotism.

He acknowledged all Filipino veterans – from World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War, and those retired from the AFP – and shared that a master development plan for the site has already been prepared to enhance its historical and cultural significance. (PNA)
