The local government here partnered with the Department of Education-Division of Iloilo City for its “TRASHkolekta: Basura ta, Manggad naton,” formalized with the signing of a memorandum of agreement on Monday.

“This memorandum of agreement signifies more than just a policy. It is also a call to action for every Ilonggo to take part in preserving our city and securing a livable future for generations to come,” Mayor Jerry Treñas said in a statement. “By working together, we are not only managing waste, but we are also transforming mindsets, inspiring change, and shaping a cleaner, greener, and more progressive Iloilo City.”

The program encourages students to trade or sell discarded products and recyclable materials under the supervision of the Federated Parent-Teachers Association (FPTA).

The initiative will be rolled out across elementary and secondary schools under the city’s division, involving students, principals, teachers, non-teaching staff, FPTA and members of the Earth Keepers’ Club.

The Earth Keepers’ Club/FPTA officers shall manage the implementation, with tasks to include, among others, the conduct of school-based recycling and waste initiatives, collecting and segregating, and facilitating the trading.

The program will target the collection of cans, plastic, bottles, papers, cartons, brass/copper and pewter.

The City General Services Office will oversee the implementation while the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) will ensure compliance with local solid waste ordinances.

“Effective waste management is not merely an environmental responsibility but is also an economic and social imperative. By reducing waste, promoting recycling, and integrating sustainable practices, we safeguard our resources, protect our ecosystems, and enhance public health,” Treñas said.

Signatories to the agreement included Treñas, Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, FPTA president Antonio Jacoba, Assistant Department Head II Maria Mathilde Treñas, Iloilo City Schools Division Superintendent Ma. Luz De Los Reyes, and CENR officer Janis Mae Sy. (PNA)
