An Indigenous Peoples (IP) community in Barangay Saguigui, Pagudpud has begun roasting its own coffee blend and is set to expand production this year, provincial officials said.

Joegie Jimenez, environment representative of the Ilocos Norte government, said an additional 100 hectares of coffee plantation is being developed in the area, on top of the existing 100-hectare project launched years ago under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ National Greening Program (NGP).

“This collaborative effort highlights the partnership between the provincial government of Ilocos Norte-environment and natural resources office and the local community stakeholders in promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities,” he said in a statement.

The project is supported by the Department of Agriculture, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the provincial and municipal governments, in partnership with the IP community.

Jimenez credited Barangay Ranger Officers for maintaining the plantations, now nearing harvest.

Coffee varieties grown include Arabica, Excelsa, and Liberica.

A DOST-donated coffee roasting machine was tested on Jan. 25 to improve product quality. The DA has also committed funds for a processing facility, nursery, and solar drier.

Mayor Rafael Ralph Benemerito earlier said up to 500 hectares are available for coffee development in Saguigui, citing strong market demand.

In 2021, the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) allocated PHP3 million to revitalize coffee growing in the province’s lowland and hilly areas in support of the government’s NGP and to boost livelihood in the area. (PNA)
