The award-winning actress Iza Calzado, who turned 39 on August 12, finally gets to play the upcoming ‘Darna’ who would pass the magic white stone to Jane de Leon, the lead star of ABS-CBN’s adaptation of the “Mars Ravelo’s Darna: The TV Series.”

“Finally, I can claim to be part of the Pinoy superhero history! Calzado told ABS-CBN.

According to ABS-CBN, Calzado waited for 4 years to be part of the much-anticipated childhood heroine TV series.

“I almost had the chance in the past, but God had other plans. I was not meant to be that Darna but he surely prepared me to play this Darna. Everything always happens in His perfect time,” the actress added.

As timely as it is, Calzado calls it the “Pandemic Darna” despite the odds and all of this pandemic feels, and “even without the ABS-CBN franchise,” she added.

“At a time of great crisis, there has got to be a hero we can relate to—someone who brings out the best in us and a representation not only of our strong but loving and compassionate core. A hero who has learned to embrace her strengths and weaknesses, knowing full well that this only makes the light within brighter and allows for others to see and experience their own light,” Calzado said.

In 2014, Angel Locsin was tapped to play the role to be directed by Erik Matti yet dropped the project same with Liza Soberano who also backed out due to some health reasons. In return, it was in 2019 when Jane de Leon reigned as Darna.

After many dropouts, the TV series will finally push through this September.

In the original Pinoy comics, Darna is described as “a young woman who transforms into Darna, in full battle gear, when she swallows a tiny meteorite and shouts the name of the extraterrestrial warrior- DARNA!…” The heroine adaptation began in 1951.
