Representatives from the Export-Import (EXIM) Bank of Korea are currently surveying the site of the Samar Pacific Coastal Road Project phase 2 (SPCR 2) in Northern Samar, three months after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. approved its implementation.

The Korean representatives arrived in the province Thursday for the week-long Economic Development Cooperation Fund appraisal mission.

“As part of the appraisal mission, the group will carry out a comprehensive project site survey and assessment. They are also set to discuss with local government officials significant information involving the project such as scope of work, implementation plan, terms and conditions, cost estimates, among others,” the provincial government of Northern Samar said in a statement.

Governor Edwin Ongchuan and Northern Samar 2nd District Rep. Harris Ongchuan welcomed the group accompanied by the Department of Public Works and Highways at the provincial capitol.

SPCR 2 covers the construction of the Laoang Bridge 2 and 3 to complete the connectivity of the Pacific towns to Laoang and the rest of Samar Island.

Marcos approved the project during the 7th National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Board Meeting on July 19, 2023, in Malacañang.

The endorsement came after the Chief Executive led the inauguration of the Korean EXIM Bank-funded SPCR project phase 1 in Simora village in Palapag, Northern Samar, in July, five years after the construction started.

It was completed after five years of construction.

The SPCR 2 Project is set to include the construction of a 800-meter bridge, named Laoang Bridge 2 that will connect Talisay village to Poblacion Laoang, as well as a 605-meter bridge known as Laoang Bridge 3, connecting Calomotan to Pangpang villages in Palapag.

The provincial government sees the SPCR 2 project as a key to eradicating insurgency, enhancing connectivity, stimulating economic growth, and unlocking the full potential of the province’s tourism sector. (PNA)
