Candymaker Mars Incorporated announced the makeover of the iconic M&M candy characters to fit in a ‘more dynamic, progressive world.’

The two female M&Ms, the green and brown ones, will undergo the most significant modifications.

The solution appears to be for the green M&M to ditch her stiletto boots in favor of sneakers, and for the brown M&M to wear somewhat lower heels to a “professional height,” according to Mars spokespersons.

In terms of the green and brown M&Ms’ relationship, it will be built on the two “together throwing shine and not shade,” as a response to how the two have been at odds in promotional material at times.

Orange M&M, who is generally shown as anxious, will “embrace his true self, worries and all,” while Red M&M, who is frequently the bully of the group, will be nicer in the future.

Prefixes will be removed from all of the characters’ names in order to focus on “their personalities, rather than their gender,” and they’ll have new poses “to make everyone feel like they’re a part of the crew, and fans will see more characters featured together in group shots and with each other, making anyone feel invited.”

Aside from the character design, the ampersand — a “distinctive element within the M&M’s logo that serves to connect the two Ms to demonstrate how the company seeks to bring people together” — is now being placed up straight to accentuate the ampersand, which was previously exhibited on a diagonal.

“M&M’s has long been committed to creating colorful fun for all, and this purpose serves as a more concrete commitment to what we’ve always believed as a brand: that everyone has the right to enjoy moments of happiness, and fun is the most powerful way to help people feel that they belong,” said Cathryn Sleight, Chief Growth Officer at Mars Wrigley.

The revamps are all part of M&M’s new “global commitment to building a world where everyone feels like they belong and society is inclusive,” according to the company.
