The Ministry of Social Welfare and Development in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MSSD-BARMM) released on Friday some PHP42 million in social pension to 7,000 senior citizens in Lamitan City, Basilan.

The social pension payout is in partnership with the Basilan Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) and the Lamitan City Social Welfare and Development Office.

PSWDO chief Anwary Akalun said each beneficiary received PHP6,000, covering the social pension for the third and fourth quarters.

Social pension is a government-provided stipend to assist senior citizens with their daily living and medical needs.

Councilor Kennybel Planta-Flores, chairperson of Lamitan City Council’s Committee on Social Services, extended her heartfelt gratitude to MSSD-BARMM for their resolved commitment to the elderly.

“The social pension program is more than just financial help. It is a symbol of our appreciation and gratitude for the senior citizens who have been the backbone of our communities,” Flores said in a statement.

She also assured that the Lamitan City Council will continue the policies and programs that support the welfare and dignity of senior citizens.

The payout, part of a broader effort to support 17,100 senior citizens across Basilan, will continue until Dec. 18. (PNA)
