The Negros Oriental police is preparing to fully deploy its personnel ahead of Holy Week, with heightened security measures starting Palm Sunday on April 13.

Lt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NOPPO), said they are awaiting final orders for the implementation of Oplan Semana Santa from higher authorities.

“We anticipate being placed under full alert status in the coming days, which would mean all personnel will be on duty unless there are exceptional circumstances,” Polinar said in an interview on Wednesday.

Police officers will be stationed at high-traffic areas, such as churches, transport terminals, the airport, and seaports, as a surge in visitors and returning residents is expected over the weekend.

Security coverage will also extend to resorts, tourist destinations, shopping centers, and other areas expected to draw large crowds.

Traffic rerouting may also be implemented in anticipation of various activities, including processions.

Police assistance desks will be set up in strategic locations, while foot and mobile patrols will be conducted 24/7.

Meanwhile, the NOPPO is also awaiting further guidance from the Police Regional Office -Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) after the appointment of Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Cabugao Ibay as its director.

Ibay replaces Brig. Gen Jack Wanky who was designated officer in charge of PRO-NIR on March 27. (PNA)
