The Department of Public Works and Highways in Bicol (DPWH-5) has reported the completion of over 1,700 infrastructure projects in the region under the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

During Tuesday’s “Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas” forum, DPWH-5 Regional Director Virgilio Eduarte said these projects have significantly contributed to the development of the six provinces in the region.

The completed projects include the construction, improvement, and rehabilitation of 103.77 kilometers of national roads and bridges, equivalent to 123 projects across the region.

He said some 1,483.70 linear meters or 69 bridge projects and 152 flood control and drainage projects have been completed and are now in use in the six provinces.

Also, 1,436 other projects have been completed, such as water supply systems, hospital and health facilities, market and slaughterhouses, and rainwater collectors.

“These infrastructure projects aim to enhance transportation connectivity and promote economic growth. For instance, the Albay-Sorsogon connector road serves as an alternate route for the Maharlika highway and has benefited the tourism industry by providing access to tourist attractions in the area,” he said.

Eduarte added the DPWH now focuses on constructing “3-in-1” projects, which encompass roads, flood control, and facilities for sports enthusiasts.

“Priority is given to building infrastructures that contribute to public health. Ongoing projects include the construction of a 10-storey building in the Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center, as well as primary health centers in various areas in the region,” he added.

DPWH-5 has also established partnerships with different national agencies such as the Department of Agriculture, Department of Education and the Department of Tourism for various infrastructure projects.

In a separate interview, Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Bicol Regional Head Ramil Marianito said the “Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas” is a synchronized event conducted in different regions across the country that aims to enhance public understanding and engagement with the programs and projects of different implementing agencies at the grassroots level.

“This communication strategy aims to fulfill President Marcos’ directive to promote all agencies’ operations highlighting a government in action,” he said.

Marianito added that after the DPWH, the next agencies in line at the forum every Tuesday are the Department of Transportation, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Agrarian Reform and the Department of Health. (PNA)
