The proposal to officially make Pampanga the “Christmas Capital of the Philippines” will be a huge boost to the province’s economy.

House Bill (HB) No. 6933, filed by Senior Deputy Speaker and Pampanga 3rd District Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr., recognizes Pampanga’s grand Christmas traditions and the excellent craftsmanship of its lantern-making artisans “who have significantly contributed to the robustness of the local economy and the promotion of the province as a cultural tourism destination.”

“This proposed law will further promote our province as a cultural and Christmas tourism destination. It will boost our local economy, which will mean more income and job opportunities for our kabalen (province mates) and residents of neighboring areas,” Gonzales said in a statement on Tuesday.

He also pointed out that as early as September, the province is already making and selling Christmas lanterns and related products.

Under HB 6933, the Department of Tourism is mandated to include and feature the province as the Christmas Capital in its national and regional promotion programs.

Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez fully supports the measure, saying “Christmas season is made extra special every year” by the Kapampangans (natives of Pampanga) who take pride in their famous and vibrant tradition of lantern-making.

The measure was approved at the House of Representatives on Monday with a 250-0 vote and is on its way to the Senate for its consideration. (PNA)
