Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Pangasinan are upgrading their handicraft products to be globally competitive with the support of the provincial government and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Precious Cayaon, owner of Olly+Fely by Kawayan Nature PH, said on Monday that innovation is key to reaching the global market. The goal is to evolve the materials and make products more high-end and fashionable.

Cayaon’s company, which began with traditional buri (palm leaf) bags and mats, now incorporates leather into its designs. These fashionable, sustainable bags were recently showcased at the Manila FAME trade show from Oct. 16 to 18.

She said targeting the global market not only promotes Pangasinan’s products but also provides higher value for the buri weavers in Bolinao and neighboring towns.

“A lot of people don’t do it anymore because of the value of the product. It doesn’t go up. So, when we came in, and we introduced it to the digital marketing platform, the quality was improved. We showed them that this will increase the value,” she said. Olly+Fely now partners with around 30 buri weavers.

The DTI and the provincial government have been instrumental in marketing and promoting the MSMEs through various trade shows and events.

Gemma Bistro, founder of Gemma’s Souvenir Shop from Alaminos City, said they have transformed shell souvenirs into artistic mirrors, plate chargers, and lamps using sustainable local materials.

Jocelyn Ong Perez of Crafters Joy Corn Husk Products said their items are world-class and promote environmental sustainability by utilizing corn husks that are usually burnt after harvest.

Government support

Pangasinan Governor Ramon Guico III said the MSMEs in the province have leveled up the quality of their products and their perspective for export since the provincial government opened up opportunities like joining international trade fairs.

Likewise, Guico said promoting local industries could generate essential employment for the province.

The provincial government provides assistance through initial funding to join trade fairs, training, and connections with DTI and other agencies for business growth and branding. The MSMEs are also assisted by Project Abound, founded by Dr. Arlyn Grace Guico, the governor’s mother, to ensure product quality. (PNA)
