A simultaneous mangrove planting activity was conducted by the sub-stations of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in the provinces of Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur on Friday.
In a statement on Saturday, the Coast Guard Station Surigao del Norte (CGS-SDN) said about 500 mangrove propagules were planted by its personnel from its sub-stations in the one-day planting activity in the coastal area of Barangay Lipata in Surigao City.
A separate mangrove planting activity was conducted by the sub-stations in Siargao Island, particularly in the coastal areas of Dapa and Sta. Monica where 450 propagules were planted.
“The simultaneous activities are part of the PCG’s thrust on a proactive engagement to communities in environmental conservation efforts and community relation services,” the CGS-SDN said.
The mangrove planting also coincided with the 124th anniversary celebration of the PCG with the theme “Honoring Service, Commitment and Maritime Excellence.”
About 200 mangrove propagules were also planted by personnel of Coast Guard Station Surigao del Sur (CGS-SDS) in the coastal area of Barangay Bucto in Bislig City on Friday.
In a separate statement, the CGS-SDS said the activity aimed to help preserve and restore the coastal ecosystem in the area, strengthen environmental stewardship, and highlight the importance of protecting the natural resources for future generations. (PNA)
