Many netizens were moved by the inspiring story of Eugene dela Cruz, who triumphed over four years of homelessness to gain entry into the prestigious Ateneo de Manila University and achieve academic honors. At 25 years old, Eugene graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics (Honors Program), specializing in Financial Economics with a minor in Decision Science.

At just 12 years old, Eugene found himself abandoned and left to survive the streets of Metro Manila. He took shelter under bridges when it rained, in alleys when the weather held, and inside parked tricycles or jeepneys on good days. Against all odds, Eugene persisted, managing to finish his high school education after a decade.

His grit allowed him to score entry into Ateneo de Manila University. Lacking the financial resources that are typical of an Ateneo student, Eugene poured his heart out to Ateneo’s Office of Admission and Aid and was granted a scholarship. After four grueling years, he managed to graduate with honorable mention and the third-best undergraduate thesis in economics.

Now a proud Ateneo alumnus, Eugene reflected on his journey in a Facebook post, thanking everyone who believed in him when the circumstances life dealt him seemed impossible to surmount.

Eugene’s story serves as a reminder of the power of perseverance and that there is always hope amidst darkness.
