“Beyond the laws we have created and policies that we have shaped, the legacy I’d like to leave behind as a person above all is that I have fought and I have lived. I did not just occupy space or exhale carbon dioxide. And when we die, I hope that everything we have done would have mattered, especially for the people who love us and who we love,” she said.

In a world where leadership is often measured by power and influence, Senator Risa Hontiveros redefines it through courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the people. As she reflects on her journey in public service, she emphasizes that true impact does not have to be grand, but it must be meaningful.

These words encapsulate the essence of her leadership—a life dedicated to advocacy, to ensuring that every fight for justice, equality, and human rights leaves a lasting imprint on society. As the first woman opposition senator in recent years, Hontiveros has not only championed progressive legislation but has also served as a beacon of hope for women aspiring to lead.

For young women looking to step into the world of politics, she has one message: keep dreaming.

“I was once just like you who dreamt of a better community, better country, and better world. From theater, activism, and politics, I dreamt of a brighter tomorrow for all of us. And that dreaming has led me to where I am today,” she stated.

Her advocacy for women in leadership is deeply rooted in the belief that no one understands the struggles of women better than women themselves. “Encourage more women to become leaders not just in government but in other sectors as well,” she urges. Her call to action resonates beyond politics—it is an invitation for women to take up space in every field, to carve out their own legacies, and to uplift others along the way.

Despite the demands of her career, her greatest source of strength remains her family.

“It’s difficult to be working in politics and be a mom at the same time since both are full-time jobs. But both jobs complement each other—my family gives me a reason to work, and my work helps me support my family and other families as well,” she shared.

Yet, even as she embraces the path she has taken, she acknowledges the sacrifices along the way. Raising four children while navigating the complexities of a political career was no easy feat, and if there is one thing she wishes she had more of, it would be time—more time with her children, more moments to witness their milestones.

Through it all, her guiding principle remains steadfast: humanism.

“I have always adhered to humanism, to placing value on people. As a woman of faith, this is my first bridge to God, and for others, to the universe, or someone or something greater than us,” she reflected.

This belief in the intrinsic worth of people continues to shape her work, reminding her that governance is not just about policies and politics but about lives transformed and futures secured.

As Women’s Month is celebrated, Senator Risa Hontiveros’ journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, empathy, and purpose-driven leadership. Her story is not just about laws passed or battles fought—it is about a life lived in service of others, a legacy that will inspire generations of women to lead with courage and compassion.
