The provincial government of Surigao del Norte has invested PHP16.1 million in infrastructure projects across five villages in two municipalities on Siargao Island, aiming to improve connectivity and community services.

In Sta. Monica town this week, two completed multipurpose buildings worth over PHP5.9 million were turned over to Barangay Alegria and Barangay Tambo, while a groundbreaking ceremony was held for a PHP5.2-million building in Barangay Garcia.

Janis Medina Reginio of the Surigao del Norte information office said most of the multipurpose buildings were severely damaged during Super Typhoon Odette in December 2021.

“The rehabilitation and construction of these buildings are part of the provincial government’s commitment to bring more development projects to the island,” she said.

The buildings serve as essential hubs for community activities, including livelihood training, medical missions and emergency shelters.

Also ongoing is the construction of a 400-meter road connecting Barangay Suyangan and Barangay La Januza in General Luna. The PHP4.9-million project, expected to be completed in 90 days, will improve access to the remote island villages, which are currently reachable only by a risky hour-long boat ride.

“Distance and risks did not stop the provincial government from reaching our people in far-flung areas,” the provincial government said in a statement Friday, adding that more programs and projects are in the pipeline to ensure the well-being of residents. (PNA)
